Soakaway Service FAQs

Got a question? We’re here to help.
A soakaway is typically the primary option, but it should not be employed within 5 meters of a building or road, within 2.5 meters of a boundary, or in areas of unstable ground where the water table reaches the soakaway’s base throughout the year.
The bottom of the soakaway drainage pipe must always maintain a minimum distance of 1meter from the water table or bedrock. Typically, this mandates a depth of at least 2 meters below ground level. The maximum allowable depth for soakaway drainage field pipework is 700mm.
Soakaways are best situated on land that is lower in elevation or slopes away from nearby buildings. They should be positioned at a minimum distance of 5 meters from a building’s foundations. The location should consider topography to facilitate proper drainage away from the building. Soakaways are most effective in areas with low-permeability soil and should only be considered when no alternative system is available.
A soakaway serves as an underground drainage structure designed to handle surface water on the site and promote its infiltration into the ground, as opposed to directing it offsite to locations like watercourses or sewers.

  2. They mitigate the risk of flooding by diverting surface water from sewer drains.
  3. They offer a cost-effective solution when suitable land is accessible.
  4. They lower the risk of waterborne diseases.
